Lake Vassivière

Limousin

About

1,000 hectares of water, 45 km of jagged shores that seem to have been there forever... and yet it's one of the largest man-made lakes in France.

Vassivière offers timeless landscapes, a bubble of serenity in a multi-faceted setting.

Adventure playgrounds on the water and in the wild, authentic encounters, artistic surprises, cultural events and sporting challenges punctuate the seasons.

Lac de Vassivière is a 9.76 km2 man-made lake in France, created by the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Maulde river at the end of a valley framed by two hills, the ideal place to build a dam.

The largest body of water in the Limousin and one of the largest man-made lakes in France, it lies to the north-west of the Millevaches plateau, in the heart of a thick forest, spread across the departments of Creuse and Haute-Vienne.

Vassivière Island takes you on a voyage of discovery, where the centuries intertwine to bring to life, in this magical place, the unlikely marriage between the architecture of Aldo Rossi and Xavier Fabre, architects of the Centre international d'art et du paysage, and that of the former castle and farming estate of the Vassivière family, the footprints of the masons of the Creuse.

For everyone's enjoyment, the island is pedestrianised, and can be reached on foot, by little train or, more surprisingly, by shuttle boat.
